The name ‘Serengeti’ comes from a Maasai word meaning ‘endless plains’, a fitting description for Tanzania’s most iconic national park. Every year, the Great Wildebeest Migration sees over a million animals braving a perilous journey from the western Serengeti to the Masai Mara. This incredible migration is accompanied by large populations of lions, cheetahs, and leopards, who call these plains home year-round.
The Great Wildebeest Migration: Nature’s Grand Spectacle
The Great Wildebeest Migration is an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon that occurs annually across the vast Serengeti plains and into Kenya’s Masai Mara. Thousands of wildebeest and zebras embark on this epic journey in search of lush, grassy plains. While the exact timing and route can vary each year, the migration is primarily dictated by the rains.
From December to mid-March, the herds graze on the Serengeti Plains. February marks the calving season, with around 500,000 calves being born. As the plains dry out in March and April, the wildebeest and zebras begin their westward migration.
In June and July, as the rains give way to the dry season, the herds move north towards the Masai Mara. This journey is fraught with danger, particularly during the treacherous Mara River crossing in July and August. Many animals succumb to drowning or crocodile attacks during this perilous passage.
Those that survive the crossing will reside in the Masai Mara from July to October. When the short rains return to the South and East Serengeti, typically between October and November, the herds begin their return journey.
